Event #3

 June 3, 2023

COLOR, LIGHT, MOTION is a series that features artists and scholars discussing artworks that come from the Bermant Collection of media and kinetic arts. The episode I attended was the 20th of the series and highlighted Claudia Schnugg, a curator and artscience scholar!

Professor Vesna introduced Claudia Schnugg and provided some background on her work. Dr. Schnugg has a PhD in social and economic sciences and focuses on cultural sciences and media arts. She does two things: researches collaborations between art and science to understand their effects and value, and supports and develops projects and exhibitions that combine art and science (Vesna). Schnugg shared that right now, she is curating projects at various places like ESA/ESTEC and the Institute of Stem Cells (Schnugg).

During Dr. Schnugg's presentation she focused on cosmic events and their intersections between art and space. She discussed the ways these events often captivate our attention and spark scientific interest due to their awe-inspiring nature and their potential to reveal more about the workings of the universe. The content from the lecture aligned closely to our Space + Art series of lectures (Vesna). Specifically, Dr. Schnugg's artistic examples reminded me of the artists we learned about in the Leonardo Space Art Project and the MARS Patent  (Leonardo Space Art Project Visioneers; Mars Patent).

I appreciated how the lecture demonstrated the intersections between art and science that our course focuses on. It was not my favorite event that I attended this quarter because it was very academic and at times a bit challenging to follow. However, I'd still recommend students to attend lectures with the COLOR, LIGHT, MOTION series because it pushed me to think of things in new ways and it's always special to hear directly from experts in unique fields!
